The Department of Health and Human Services is an Agency that is charged with regulating and administering certain public benefits programs to eligible households such as SNAP, Medicaid, TANF-Cash help, and Long-Term Care. Access to these public benefits for eligible individuals and families can be vital to their livelihood. There are numerous households that are eligible for these public benefit programs but are either wrongfully denied or terminated erroneously. A wrongful termination or denial can have a disastrous impact on an eligible household. This presentation is designed to discuss the Texas Health and Human Services Administrative Appeals Process so that advocates understand the steps to take in assisting eligible households that have been wrongfully denied. Throughout the presentation, advocates and attendees will get an in depth understanding on how HHSC handles the adjudicative process, agency errors that necessitate appeals, expectations once an appeal is filed, and effective strategies to use in administrative appeal advocacy.
