Consumer credit reporting impacts our clients’ access to jobs, overall economic stability, and now more than ever, safe and secure shelter. Holistic representation of low-income clients can require obtaining and understanding the client’s credit reports. In this session you will learn about the protections and limitations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act, as well as various ways to address negative credit information. We will cover how to use credit information to inform your practice in the areas of debt collection, bankruptcy, housing, and beyond. We will also discuss credit reporting as a means of preventative law, and how to work together with community workers to empower low-income clients to know and correct their credit history before problems arise.
